Photo Paintings

This Photo painting has been in the works on and off since early 2015.  Granted it has been off more than on.  But I decided to finally get this one done so I can wrap it up.  This is also the first collage style photo painting I’ve done, and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

The first thing I made was the map area.  My original idea was to make it in the style of the of the characters in the background (Pocahontas, Mulan, etc).  If I had continued at that style I would have finished much sooner.  My idea was to have the stage and place characters at different moments of the show, That included all the characters by the map, the trumpet player and King Louie.  But there was too much open space and I realized I would not be able to fit as many characters as I wanted without it looking too crowded on stage while leaving the majority of the painting without anything by the stage.

When it came time to do the painting for King Louie, I didn’t like the way he looked using the same technique I used in the back.  One of the reasons was that he was much larger and much closer to the front of the stage.  At that point I decided to paint people that were closer with my standard photo painting technique. and decided to fill the frame with more performers.

Many of the people that are in this photo painting are part of the first cast I saw perform this show. I wanted to feature the one in the top left because I had always liked her smile during the show. both the trumpet player and Sebastian were also from that original saw, and I wanted to make sure that I featured them.

I have to admit that I got lazy, I started working on the background but it was extremely tedious, and I knew that I would just end up shelving it again, so the background was mostly auto painted with just a few adjustments made after the fact.

I truly enjoyed this show.  If you ever have a chance to watch this show when it’s dark, it is worth it, the colors seem even more vibrant.  So if you are going to disneyland in the winter, make sure to catch the last show of Mickey and the Magical Map.

As always you are free to reproduce and share this picture for personal use.  I don’t own the rights to these characters and scenes, so this image may not be sold in any way.  There will also be a link for the full resolution version, in case you want to make a print or put it on canvas.

Photo Paintings from Star Wars Celebration Anaheim

Normally I have a breakdown of the steps for these photo paintings, but since it’s been one was completed last fall and the other a month and a half ago, I realized that this post would never get posted.  Both of these were from pictures I took at the 2015 Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim.  During the whole convention, I was unaware that my lens needed repair. Basically it could not focus at any range and setting.  So the photos are only ok at a small size.  But one of the great things about photo paintings is that the image does not need to be sharp.  In most cases, I take a sharp image and blend it to make it look like a painting.  I still have one more painting I wish to do from star wars celebration.  My favorite Mashup was RocketFett, a mashup of The Rocketeer and Boba Fett.  You can find him on instagram at @ROCKETFETT.

Before I get into the images for this post, I just wanted to say that all of the cosplayers were really nice and were more than willing to pose for pictures.  I only wish my lens would have been ok, so I could share the images with them.

I am featuring two cosplayers that I had followed on instagram prior to the convention.

Amber Arden @amberarden

Early in the convention I had taken a picture of her as Snowbafett, but when I saw the Sith Snow White mashup, I knew that would be the one I would use for the painting.  She is also a Custom Cocktail Hat & Jewelry Designer, you can find more info at @AmbersUniqueBoutique or visit her Etsy store at www.etsy.com/shop/AmberArden.

Joanna Lynn @joannalynnbert

This was my second favorite photo I took of Joanna,  My favorite was one of her looking over her shoulder, unfortunately it didnt’ show the R2 portion of the dress, I thought this was a better representative of the theme.  She also had an amazing Old Obi-Wan Kenobi with a walker, I’m sure people had no idea it was a girl. At Last Rapunzel’s Photo Painting Sees the Light

Back in February, I was able to finally take a picture of Rapunzel.  And as soon as I saw it, I knew I was going to make a photo painting of it. So I started right away, working on this painting. But I got distracted and never finished it. It was almost done so this weekend, I put the finishing touches on it.

As always I include a link the the full sized image that may be downloaded and reproduced for personal use.

Sleeping Beauty Photo Painting. Aurora finally makes her debut

Original Photograph of Aurora

I have been a Disneyland Annual Passholder for many years now, yet I have hardly seen Aurora around the park. I find this Ironic since it’s her castle that marks the entrance into Fantasy Land.

So a few months ago, I finally had a chance to take a picture of Aurora, it was in princess fantasy faire and outside. Even though they have improved the lighting in the meet and greet, nothing the lighting outside is always better.

This was a new technique I tried out mainly using photoshop, even though I used Corel Painter for a few touches. I like the result, but I still need more practice using the photoshop techniques.

Details – The Crown

The Crown was the most time consuming process.  In many cases I would have simply blended it all together, and given it a cleaner and simpler look.  But I really liked the thorns in the design.  I had never really noticed it until i started this painting.  This was possible with the new Photoshop Painting technique I used for this Photo Painting of Aurora.  It would have been virtually impossible to do this with any of the previous techniques I knew in Corel Painter.

Long Lost Mulan Photo Painting – Disneyland Resort

After completing the photo painting of Tiana (my previous post), which I have yet to port I found a photoshop file of Mulan that was ready to paint. I considered doing that next, but I got distracted and never went back to it. As I was looking through some old files I cam across that same image, but in the form of a Photo Painting. It turns out I had completed it back in 2011. My guess is since I never printed it out, I had no recollection of completing it. First I was glad that I didn’t do the work twice, and it freed me up to work on my next photo painting of Aurora.

I’m including the photo painting at all it’s intervals

Disney Princess Photo Photo Painting of Tiana at Disneyland

It has been a long time since I’ve updated this blog. I have plenty of material, yet I never seem to post it. Well that is about to change (at least with this post).

This past week I went to a book club meeting for the book “The Artisan Soul” by Erwin McManus. At the end of the meeting we were challenged to take 20-60 minutes to do something creative that we love.  After showing someone in the group the other Disneyland Photo Paintings I had done, she suggested I do another one.  I jokingly said, they asked for 1 hour not 5-10 hours.  So I thought, why not? I hadn’t done a photo painting since 2011 and I had forgotten how much I really enjoyed using Corel Painter.

The next thing was to find the image that I wanted to use, and immediately a series of photos came to mind.  In 2012 on my birthday I went to Disneyland and decided to stand in line for the Princess meet and greet.  Tiana was the third princess in line. so at that point she was still waiting for the first guests to her.  When she noticed I was taking pictures she decided to do some posing.  I ended up choosing the one you see pictured below.

For the first time, I will be posting an image from each major step.  The whole process took about 10 hours at a leisurely pace while the office played in the background.

Disney Princess Tiana at the Disneyland Resort - Original

Out of all the photos in the series, this was the one selected in it’s original state

Disney Princess Tiana at the Disneyland Resort - Concept

For The first time I decided to do a huge change to the original image. My concept was to make this a nighttime scene. I wanted it to be in the spirit of the scene where Tiana is on the balcony, right before she meets the frog.

Tiana-03-cleanup

Even though I love the original image, I could really do without the railing in front of her. So I decided to remove it in Photoshop and roughly reconstruct the bricks.

Disney Princess Tiana at the Disneyland Resort - Texture and Contrast

An important part of the photo painting process is to create more highlights and shadows. Though her dress has amazing detail, all that would be lost in the photo painting process and it would all blending into one color. All the steps up to this point were done during my lunch hour utilizing photoshop

This is a screenshot of the background that was created through automatic and manual touches. This is the first image that contains work that was done using Corel Painter.

Disney Princess Tiana at the Disneyland Resort - Objects

This step covers the props in the foreground. Both the lamps and the bricks were painted. While Tiana is still as she was in Photoshop.

If this image was not going to be converted into a night time image, this would be the last step. Tiana and her dress have been completed in this step and it no longer has the texture of a photograph. I decided not to paint it at night in case I liked the daytime version better.

Disney Princess Tiana at the Disneyland Resort - Painting Complete

This is the final product. The image was brought into Photoshop and it was transformed from a day picture to a night scene.

I had forgotten how much I enjoyed photo painting.  I will probably start another one in a few weeks.  Please let me know which character you would like to see next: Mulan, Jasmine, Pocahontas or Tinkerbell.
